Gergely Horváth
CARBON

2026, Dec 7 – 2027, Jan 24
PUCCS Contemporary Art, Budapest

OPENING: 2026, December 7, 6.00-7.30 pm

Gergely Horváth’s installation, entitled Carbon, is a personal reflection on the record-breaking destruction caused by forest fires worldwide in 2026. Since records began, there has never been such extensive destruction. The causes include the rainless heatwaves brought about by climate change, as well as human negligence or, indeed, financial interests. The artist wishes to draw attention to this phenomenon, or at the very least to prompt passers-by to reflect on it. He fills the space of PUCCS with charred trees, as if even this small section of the world had been caught up in the fires. The black elements stand out against the white space, creating a striking and attention-grabbing contrast.

The installation is closely linked to the artist’s recent works, in which he has focused primarily on humankind and its environment, exploring human-ecological questions such as how people relate to nature today, what impact they have on it, and what impact nature might have on them. He is also particularly concerned with the climate crisis, a theme that features in his degree project and in the sculptures he has created since then – the ‘Technical Trees’ series. He creates these works by laminating various types of waste furniture boards and MDF sheets, before carving them back into their original wooden forms.

Gergely Horváth was born in Siófok in 1996. After graduating from a technical college specialising in furniture design, he was admitted to the Hungarian University of Fine Arts, where he studied in Zoltán Karmó’s class from 2018 to 2025. He has exhibited, amongst other venues, at the 2024 National Ceramic Art Triennial at m21 Gallery in Pécs, the Eötvös10 Gallery and the HAB in Budapest. In 2021, he was awarded the Fundamenta – Amadeus Creative Scholarship, and in 2025, his degree project won the Tamás Vígh Prize for the best sculpture. He is currently a first-year recipient of the Gyula Derkovits Scholarship.
